In her statement, during an interview, she said: “I strongly believe my role in this life is to bring people stories that have the potential to change lives. The most satisfying thing about my job is getting to work with the most dedicated team and knowing there are millions of Kenyans watching and supporting our work.” She was awarded the 2024 humanitarian journalist of the year award (Café Ngoma award) courtesy of her impactful stories.

Lynn started schooling at Kaweru Primary School but moved to Nairobi in class3. Due to poverty, she changed schools more often.

She later completed her class eight with 383 marks gaining her a straight entry to Moi girls high school.

Due to lack of fees, she had to repeat at Ndururuno primary school where she performed better and received a letter to join Kenya High Girls School.

Disheartened again due to the lack of school fees, instead of Kenya Girls High School, she joined Mugumu High School.

Lynn completed her high school studies in 2004 excelling with a mean grade of B+( Plus).

She was to join the University of Nairobi but due to a lack of Fees, Bursary and sponsorship she stayed off school for a while.

She now has an Associate’s Degree in Mass Communication/ Broadcast Journalism from East Africa School of Media Studies 2013.

Lynn Ngugi is a Kikuyu by tribe from Githuya Muranga County. They often say that where one grows can influence their future choices.

Lynn believes it is her background that shaped and molded her into the person she is today.

She was however born at Pumwani hospital in Nairobi where they lived before her parents divorced.

She grew up in Nairobi’s Huruma Estate and lived in a single room together with her mother (Margret Ngina) and three sisters.

Two of her sisters are named Ruth and June.

Her mom bought shoes at Gikomba and would sell them for a profit. With time, they moved from a single room to a double and were finally able to move to a house of their years later. 

Lynn Ngugi Career

Having studied media, she wanted to be a broadcast journalist but was unable to secure a job.

She worked as a Producer at Kiwo Films from Feb 2011 up to Mar 2014 and then got an opening in Qatar at the Qatar Foundation Research and Development from Jun 2014 to Dec 2016 as a Project Manager. 

With the hope of starting a talk show, she returned to Kenya and shot a pilot for the show named Kilimani’s mum’s talk show. Her investment in the pilot Kilimani’s mum’s talk was seen as trending but with the trend came a huge shock for her.

Lynn was sued by one of the country’s biggest media houses for copyright and trademark infringement. It is no surprise she lost the suit as fighting against a huge media house.

She had also invested several hundred thousand Kenyan shillings in a friend’s school in a bid to save it but the school went under.

Lynn was destitute and did not even have rent when a friend from University (Edwin Ochieng) called her to report some news for TUKO in 2017.

TUKO was founded in 2015 and is one of the biggest online news platforms in Kenya.

She successfully did the gig and was called for a few others. The same year, she became an employee and was first under probation before being fully employed.

She was the producer and presenter of TUKO since August 2017. Through her segments on TUKO, lives have been impacted in ways very few TV shows have ever managed. 

Why Lynn Ngugi left TUKO

Lynn left TUKO after 4 years of work in 2024 to focus on her overwhelming YouTube platform.

In a video on her YouTube channel, Ms. Ngugi clarified that she had left the blog on friendly terms. 

In an interview on the YouTube channel, she said, “Thank you so much to people in Tuko and also to all other people outside who are also very helpful towards the journey. Mine is never to burn bridges of course. But it’s also important for you to know when you are having a purposeful life. It’s important to know where your journey ends and where another one begins,” the presenter said.

The celebrated presenter added that she was not afraid to start from scratch because she also started many shows at her former workplace.

Ms. Ngugi told off people who have the notion that they are responsible for her success in the media industry, reiterating that God is the one who gave her the talent.

She is now the founder of Lynn Ngugi Network and  CEO /EXECUTIVE PRODUCER since September 2024.
